Safety Measures Installed at Veterans Drive

Safety Measures Installed on Signal Lights at Colington Road/Veterans Drive Intersection

On February 1, 2016, North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) crews installed back plates to the traffic signals at the intersection of Veterans Drive and S.R. 1217 (Colington Road).  Following a fatal collision in 2015, members of the Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners and Town staff reached out to transportation officials to work to identify and implement potential solutions to increase the safety of the intersection.

Representatives from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) have confirmed that the back plates were installed and stated: “We still have a few items that we are studying at this time.  We just wanted to address the issue of the sun blindness as soon as we could.”

Mayor Sheila Davies stated, “It is great to see that in the wake of such tragedy, NCDOT is working to quickly to respond and address safety concerns expressed by our citizens.”

The Town of Kill Devil Hills will continue to work with transportation officials as the review process continues, and will provide updates as available.
