Beach Driving in KDH - At a Glance
Beach Driving Season
The beach driving season runs from October 1 through April 30 each year.
Types of Driving Permits
Two types of permits are available: seasonal ($25) and temporary ($10 - good for 14 days).
Driving Permits Good in KDH AND Nags Head
Through a reciprocal agreement, KDH beach driving permits are recognized between the Town of Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills. This allows the holder of a KDH permit to drive on Nags Head Beaches and vice versa.
Where to Get a Permit
Beach driving permits are required and can be purchased 8 am - 5 pm, M-F, at KDH Town Hall, second floor at the Cashier's Desk, located at 102 Town Hall Drive. Nags Head Permits (which allow you to drive in KDH) are available at Nags Head Town Hall or local bait & tackle shops.
It is anticipated that there will be a higher volume of beach-goers this beach driving season. Pay extra attention to foot-travelers, sunbathers, and your surroundings.
Lifeguards have extended their service until October 15th. Provide lifeguards with ample space to allow them easy access to and from their destinations. Remember to move over for emergency lights.
Storms and high tides can cause rough beach conditions and may limit driving room. During high tides, portions of the beach are likely to become impassible. Obey all closure signs and notices. Check the Town’s website and social media pages regularly for any possible closures.
