Latest Information from the
Town of Kill Devil Hills

Until there is a vaccine, we must be the vaccine. To keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our community protected we must continue to stay home, practice physical distancing, wash our hands frequently, and wear a cloth face covering when out for essential trips.

COVID-19 is not the only thing that is highly contagious. Hope, compassion, and kindness are also extremely contagious, and they are worth spreading, especially in trying times such as this.

The changes and sacrifices we have been making have not been easy, but they are making a difference. During this challenging time, it is important that we choose to speak with kindness and compassion. Whether you are speaking with neighbors, out-of-towners, employees, or commenting on social media, please choose goodwill and civility.

We encourage you to continue acting as the vaccine. And, in a world where you can be anything, be kind. We're in this together. We’ll get through this together. We’re looking forward to the brighter days ahead, and to get there faster, we must each keep doing our part.

Weather Safety:
Have Multiple Ways of Receiving Warnings

Weather Alert Methods

We have a chance for severe weather to affect our area this evening into tomorrow morning. Before any weather event, be sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings.

Here are a few helpful tips from the National Weather Service, to implement ahead of a weather event:

  • Activate wireless emergency alerts on your mobile device.
  • Check the batteries in your weather radio.
  • Have a way to be woken up when weather warnings are issued for our area.

For other ways to receive weather warnings and for regular updates monitor the National Weather Service’s website, www.weather.gov/mhx

Low Risk is not No Risk

"LOW RISK" IS NOT "NO RISK"

Know Your Flood Zone
FEMA along with the State of North Carolina has released updated flood maps for all of Dare County, which are scheduled to take effect on June 19, 2020.

The updated maps feature significant changes and they
DO NOT reflect flood risk and the historic flooding in the Town of Kill Devil Hills. A large number of properties in Kill Devil Hills are being reclassified to “low risk” flood zone properties and the base flood elevations are decreasing.

In recognition of the changes that the new maps present, the Town of Kill Devil Hills and the other municipalities in Dare County are proposing the adoption of a flood damage prevention ordinance, that will maintain a minimum building elevation standard.

Contact the Kill Devil Hills Planning Department to determine the flood zone of your property or to obtain information on historical flooding in your neighborhood and other hazards affecting the property. The Town's Planning Department can also explain steps you can take to prepare your property for flooding and reduce the risks of flood damages. Give them a call at 252.449.5318 or email Cameron@kdhnc.com.
