Latest Information from the
Town of Kill Devil Hills

The Town’s top priority continues to be the health, safety, and well-being of everyone.

Kill Devil Hills’ offices are accessible by appointment only. Town Departments have made adjustments to continue serving you in a safe, yet, proficient manner. Many services can be conducted by phone, email, fax, or by using our website. If you have business with the Town that can only be addressed in person, please call or email us to schedule an appointment. For each Department’s contact information and updates to their daily operations, visit our website, www.kdhnc.com.

The Town’s Dry Trash Drop Off and Recycle Center reopens today, May 4th. Please visit www.kdhnc.com/DocumentCenter/View/12310 for information on the Center’s hours of operations and implemented guidelines for use.

We understand the desire to be outside is more powerful than ever. The sunshine and warmer temperatures are bringing citizens out to the beach and parks. Since people can spread the virus before they know they are sick, it is important to keep a distance of at least six feet between you and others, and to limit group sizes to less than 10 people, even if you have no symptoms.

Thank you for continuing to do your part. We know it’s not easy, but you are making a difference.

With Love From Kill Devil Hills

If you've taken a walk around Aviation Park recently you may have noticed something special on display. Our heart is back up!

This hand-crafted heart, usually complete with a Cupid's arrow, is typically on display during only the month of February. Although the month of February is long gone, the display of our Town heart reminds us that each day we all have a choice to continue to exhibit love, hope, and kindness; and that's exactly what we will keep choosing to do - it's the KDH way.

We will get through this tough time together. Hang in there, and continue supporting one another. And, know that no matter what, our team at the Town remains here for you.

COVID-19 Bulletin #55 from Dare County Emergency Management

State Cases of COVID-19   In North Carolina, there are currently 11,848 cases of COVID-19 in 99 counties. There have been 430 fatalities in NC associated with COVID-19. Currently, the state is reporting 498 hospitalizations across the state from COVID-19 illness.

County’s Positive Test Results   Two additional positive test results were reported to the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services the evening of May 1, 2020, bringing the total count of positive test results to 18. These two individuals who tested positive are family members of the individual whose positive test result was reported on April 30, 2020. These cases were acquired by direct contact and are not indicative of community spread.

Public Safety Alerts
As planned and announced in Bulletin #54, Dare County Emergency Management utilized the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) to issue a public safety alert this morning. IPAWS allows public safety messages to be sent to enabled wireless cellular devices that are in or that enter Dare County.

The goal of using IPAWS to issue these public safety alerts is to raise awareness of the State and County stay at home orders that are in place, as well as the Dare County requirement to wear a face-covering in public settings where social distancing is difficult to maintain. As our population gradually increases these alerts will be helpful in ensuring individuals in Dare County are informed of the required measures in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.  Future alerts will be issued late morning to early afternoon.

Spread Kindness Not Germs

Community members recently showed their love and support to the caregivers and residents at Peak Resources (a nursing and rehabilitation facility). The residents and caregivers were stationed inside near areas where they could witness the heartwarming support from their fellow community members. Citizens conducted a vehicular/walking parade around the facility, in which they shared homemade signs of encouragement.

Hurricane Preparedness Week

Take some time this week - Hurricane Preparedness Week - to make sure you have a hurricane evacuation plan. The first thing you need to do is find out if you live in a storm surge hurricane evacuation zone or if you’re in a home that would be unsafe during a hurricane. If you are, figure out where you’d go and how you’d get there if told to evacuate. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

As hurricane season approaches, listen to local officials on questions related to how you may need to adjust any evacuation plans based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC and your local officials.
