"LOW RISK" IS NOT "NO RISK"

Know Your Flood Zone
FEMA along with the State of North Carolina has released updated flood maps for all of Dare County, which are scheduled to take effect on June 19, 2020.

The updated maps feature significant changes and they DO NOT reflect flood risk and the historic flooding in the Town of Kill Devil Hills. A large number of properties in Kill Devil Hills are being reclassified to “low risk” flood zone properties and the base flood elevations are decreasing.

In recognition of the changes that the new maps present, the Town of Kill Devil Hills and the other municipalities in Dare County are proposing the adoption of a flood damage prevention ordinance, that will maintain a minimum building elevation standard.

Contact the Kill Devil Hills Planning Department to determine the flood zone of your property or to obtain information on historical flooding in your neighborhood and other hazards affecting the property. The Town's Planning Department can also explain steps you can take to prepare your property for flooding and reduce the risks of flood damages. Give them a call at 252.449.5318 or email Cameron@kdhnc.com.
