Contractors working on the Colington Road Water Main Relocation Project, are planning to bore under Colington Road tomorrow, July 21st. The underground casing will hold the future waterline crossing under Colington Road, just west of Mustian Street.  No lane closures are anticipated; however, construction operations will be taking place on both sides of the road. (By boring the casing, the contractor will be able to install the waterline without having to close the road.)  Please use extra caution when driving near areas of construction.

Beat the Heat with a few Safety Tips:

As we are experiencing high heat indexes and heat advisories this week be sure to take extra safety precautions when outside by minimizing your sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When possible, reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening. Otherwise, seek shade, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, a hat,
and sunglasses, use sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.

During hot and humid weather, your body's ability to cool itself is challenged. When your body heats too rapidly to cool itself properly, or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, you may experience a heat-related illness.
Learn the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses.
Signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

It is never safe to leave a child, disabled or elderly person or a pet locked in a car (even in the winter.) Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets, and even adults. When left in a hot car, people and animals can die of heatstroke within a matter of minutes. Leaving the windows slightly open does not decrease the heating rate enough for safety.

Remember, if it’s too hot for you to walk on
the asphalt or sand barefoot, it’s too hot for your dog!

A Reminder to Leave Nothing but Footprints on the Beach

We have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful and clean beach. Please remove all personal items from the beach each day. In Kill Devil Hills, leaving items on the beach overnight is prohibited.

Items left on the beach can be harmful to people, including emergency responders, and wildlife, like hatchling sea turtles that must make their way to the water to survive.

And, don’t forget to fill in all sand holes, which also create extreme hazards for others when left unattended.

We want all people and wildlife to be able to continue enjoying a litter-free beach!
