Police Week and
Peace Officers Memorial Day

In Kill Devil Hills, we recognize May 9-15, 2021, as Police Week and May 15, 2021, as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

It is important that our citizens know and understand the challenges, duties, and responsibilities of their police department.

The KDH Police Department provides a vital public service to our community. We appreciate all members of our Police Department for saving lives and making a difference, protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens, protecting against violence and disorder, protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression.

Please join us in saying “thank you” to the Kill Devil Hills Police Department for all that they do.

With honor and gratitude, we also recognize all law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the performance of their duty.

Thanks, Outer Banks

The First Flight, Kitty Hawk, and Manteo Rotary Clubs and the Outer Banks Hospital have collaborated to initiate "Thanks, Outer Banks!" - A Week of Gratitude, an effort to highlight the Outer Banks community- its courage, compassion, and strength in making it through the pandemic together.

"Thanks, Outer Banks! is a Celebration of Gratitude encouraging businesses, citizens, and community groups to come together and thank everyone on the Outer Banks who is helping us get through the COVID pandemic. We are a GRATEFUL COMMUNITY and encourage Outer Banks citizens and businesses to show and visibly express their gratitude for anyone who helped keep us all safe, fed, clothed, fueled, connected, schooled, with water & power, and so on.

Let’s show that people of the Outer Banks sincerely appreciate EVERYONE who is helping us get through the pandemic." (First Flight Rotary)

Hurricane Preparedness Week 5/9-5/15

Hurricane Preparedness Week

It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Tropical cyclones are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. Evaluate what you need to do to protect your home and family NOW, before the first storm of the season even forms.

Take some time this week - Hurricane Preparedness Week - to prepare.

You can start by making sure you have:

An evacuation plan -

Figure out where you’d go and how you’d get there if told to evacuate. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

Supplies -
Just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a LONG recovery period too.

Insurance
Make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home, and remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. Find coverage and other information

A plan to secure your home
If you plan to ride out a hurricane in your home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications. More information

Information on how to help your neighbors
You can play a large role in how your neighbors fare before, during and after a hurricane.

A written plan
Once you’re under pressure, having a written plan will take the guesswork out of what you need to do to protect you and your family. How to make a plan
