to Reflect Public Health Recommendations

On Friday, June 11, 2021, Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order 220 to extend a variety of measures currently in place to respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic until July 30. “We are seeing tremendous improvement with fewer cases, hospitalizations, deaths and safety restrictions, but this is no time to hang up a “Mission Accomplished” banner in our fight against the pandemic,” said Gov. Cooper.

As a result, the Town of Kill Devil Hills has extended its State of Emergency Order until 5:00 p.m. on July 30, 2021.

Dare County and National Weather Service to Host Hurricane Preparedness Forum on 6/21

Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson will be joined by Erik Heden, the National Weather Service’s local Warning Coordination Meteorologist, for a Hurricane Preparedness Forum at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 21, 2021.

The forum is free and open to the public. Speakers at the forum will share important information on preparedness actions as well as updates on weather service forecast products. Topics will include important preparedness efforts and why it’s important to never focus only upon the category of a storm but instead to focus on the storm’s potential impacts. At the end of the forum, time will be set aside for a community discussion during which attendees can ask questions and share their concerns.

Participants will be able to attend the forum virtually or in person. For the virtual option, internet access is required, and participants must register online by clicking here.  Virtual attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions using the chat and/or audio features of the meeting software.

Limited in-person seating is also available at the Dare County Emergency Operations Center, which is located at 370 Airport Road in Manteo. To reserve a seat to attend the event in person, call 252-475-5655 or email James Wooten at james.wooten@darenc.com. Seats will be assigned based on the date and time of the participant’s call or email.

For more information about the Hurricane Preparedness Forum, contact Drew Pearson at 252-475-5655 or drew.pearson@darenc.com.

June 16th is World Sea Turtle Day. Sea turtles are nesting along the Outer Banks beaches. Please assist us in protecting these endangered species by taking a few precautions:
  • Turn off beach front lights after dusk
  • Close blinds/curtains in beach front homes
  • Do not disturb nesting females or hatchlings by using flashlights of flash photography
  • Fill in any holes and knock down any sand castles before you leave the beach
  • Remove all personal items and trash from the beach
  • Report all nesting turtles, turtle crawls, stranded/dead turtles, or hatching events on the Outer Banks to the N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) hotline at 252-441-8622

Outer Banks Women's Club collecting plastic bags to be recycled

Plastic Bag Recycling Program

The Outer Banks Women's Club is collecting plastic grocery/store bags to be recycled by TREX Company during June-December, 2021.

The bags can be deposited in designated receptacles at the following locations:
- YMCA (3000 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head)
- Baum Center (309 Mustian Street, KDH)
- Joe Lamb Realty (4607 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk)

At the end of the collection period, TREX will recycle the bags into a bench that will be located in the OBX community.

All plastic bags need to be clean, dry, and free of food residue. Flattening the bags before placing in receptacle is also helpful. Thank you for your support of our recycling project.
