Stay Prepared this Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is not over. It is critical that you stay prepared.

Have enough food, water, and other supplies for every member  of your family to last at least 72 hours. Consider what unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for pets or seniors and prescription medications. In addition, it is recommended that you add two cloth face coverings per family member and cleaning items to your kit, like soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, or general household cleaning supplies to disinfect surfaces. After a hurricane, you may not have access to these supplies for days or even weeks.

Special Medical Needs Registry

If someone in your family has a disability, be sure you are prepared by:

  • Including medical info like allergies & medication regimen in your emergency kit.
  • Planning ahead for accessible transportation, in the event of an evacuation.

Did you know that Dare County has a Special Medical Needs Registry? Individuals on the registry are typically defined as being a group of people who would need assistance with medical care and/or personal care during an evacuation for a hurricane or those who may need assistance while they are sheltering during a storm due to their physical and/or mental impairments.

Special consideration must be given to this population’s needs during an emergency, and the staff of the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services' Social Services Division works diligently to ensure that these individuals are taken care of before, during and after a storm.
If you or someone you know may benefit from being added to the Special Medical Needs Registry, please contact the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services' Social Services Division at 252-475-5500 or email Adult Services Supervisor Katie McCarron at McCarronK@dcdss.org.

Slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing a mask, washing your hands, and distancing

COVID-19 Update

Dare County is continuing to experience widespread community transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Please do your part to slow the spread.

All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, ages 5 and over should wear a mask when indoors in public settings. All individuals should consider wearing a mask when outside if gathering in large crowds. Individuals ages 12 and over should get vaccinated for COVID-19 to help prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and death.

NC DHHS epidemiological data indicates the state and Dare County are in the middle of another surge of COVID-19 infections. The Delta variant is believed to be the most prevalent variant in Dare County at this time. The CDC and NC DHHS indicate it is a significantly more contagious variant. For every one person infected by the Delta variant it is estimated they may spread the virus to 6 other individuals. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself against COVID-19. People who are vaccinated are far less likely to get infected with COVID-19 than those who are not vaccinated. Based on self-reports during contact tracing interviews, in the low percentage of breakthrough cases, individuals who are vaccinated are experiencing mild to no symptoms.

In addition to getting vaccinated, other ways you can protect yourself and your family include limiting prolonged direct contact with unvaccinated individuals who do not live in your household, and washing your hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizer. It is also recommended that all individuals in Dare County wear a mask indoors, as Dare County is currently considered an area of high community transmission.
