TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE EXTENDED THROUGH FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2022West Third Street at US 158 The temporary road closure that began on February 21, 2022, for West Third Street, from its intersection with US 158 to the Dare Centre entrance, for utility and roadway improvements by Fred Smith Company has been extended through Friday, March 25, 2022, in order to allow the crews to continue their work in a safe and efficient manner.
This closure is necessary for the installation of a large drainage culvert, multiple small drainage cross lines, new water mains, new curb and gutter, and to accommodate a slight shift in the alignment of West Third Street as it approaches US 158.
Due to an anticipated increase in traffic volumes during this closure, all motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are urged to proceed with extra care and patience during their travels.
West Third Street Access: Access to West Third at the intersection with US 158 will be prohibited during this closure. Local traffic will access West Third Street from the west using West Fifth Street to Bay Drive, then Bay Drive to West Third Street. This will be the only marked detour route.
Dare Centre Access: All entrances to the Dare Centre are planned to remain open.
Circle K Convenience Store/Fueling Station Access, located at 1800 N. Croatan Hwy: Only the US 158 entrance will remain open during the closure.
Access to the houses at 106, 108 and 200 West Third Street, will remain open from the west only. (There will be limited road width.)

Join us for the 2022 Trash Attack! Community Clean Up Event, which will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m., beginning at Aviation Park, 100 Veterans Drive, across from First Flight High School. The rain date is Sunday, April 10, 2022, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
As we transition back into our first in-person Trash Attack! following COVID, we are conducting a “lite” event to best maintain participant comfort levels. In addition to an event t-shirt, participants will be offered bottled water and individually-wrapped snack bars. Due to school scheduling and timelines, Trash Attack! will reintroduce its popular poster contest in 2023. Click here to complete a pre-registration form
Once you complete the form, please save it and email it to info@kdhnc.com. Please complete a form for each participant.
After everyone gathers at the event kick-off at Aviation Park, participants will pick up their gloves and grabbers and head out across Town to "attack" the trash. Beach, soundside, or anywhere in between, volunteers can help make our KDH Community a much cleaner, much brighter area!

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.
Here's what you need to know: - A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
- Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
- Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
- Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
- When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
- Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.
