Fire Prevention Week &

KDH Fire Department Open House

Kill Devil Hills recognizes this week as Fire Prevention Week. This year’s focus is on cooking safety.

Cooking brings family and friends together, provides an outlet for creativity, and can be relaxing. But did you know that cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries? It is such a routine activity that it is easy to forget that the high temperatures involved can easily start a fire.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.

Cook with Caution

• Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.

• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

 • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

If you have a small (grease) cooking fire and decide to fight the fire...

• On the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

• For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

If you have any doubt about fighting a small fire…

• Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.

 • Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from outside the home.

Although it is Fire Prevention Week, remember that fire prevention happens all year long! Have questions or need additional safety tips? Give the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department a call at 252-480-4060 or. . .

Dog's Day at the Splash Pad

We had a fantastic first season with the Town’s new Splash Pad! It’s closed for the season, but we'll be eagerly awaiting its opening next year after Memorial Day. We couldn’t let the season splash on by without having one last hurrah – so we’re bringing back one more of those ‘dog days of summer.’ The Town is excited to announce we are opening the Splash Pad for our furry friends! All dogs, big and small, are welcome to enjoy the Splash Pad on Thursday, October 12, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Bring your four-legged friend for one last day of water fun Please make sure to have a leash on your dog when walking to and from the Splash Pad. For the safety of all, we ask that only well-behaved dogs that are up to date on all vaccines come play. We can't wait to see you there!
