Severe Weather Preparedness Week:

March 3 - 9, 2024

Severe Weather Preparedness Week is recognized from Sunday, March 3, 2024 through Saturday, March 9, 2024. Visit the National Weather Service's Severe Weather Preparedness Week website for important preparedness tips and information. It's crucial for everyone to be ready for the impacts of severe weather, no matter what the season.

Here are a few local tips for staying informed and being fully prepared as North Carolina’s 2024 Severe Weather Preparedness Week is being observed:

  • Sign Up for OBX Alerts: Sign up to receive customized emergency alerts—including severe weather watches and warnings, public safety and emergency-related warnings, countywide evacuation orders and other time-critical notifications—via the OBX Alerts platform by visiting www.OBXAlerts.com.
  • Always Have Multiple Ways to Receive Alerts: Make sure you have government notifications activated on your mobile devices. If you have a NOAA Weather Radio at work or home, make sure it works during the Statewide Tornado Drill, which will take place on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. Keep your TV or a radio on during the drill to determine if the Emergency Alert System will deliver National Weather Service alerts to your home or business.
  • Monitor Rising Water Levels: Sign up to receive alerts if water levels in your area begin to rise due to storm surge, which can occur on both the soundside and oceanside of communities throughout Dare County. Visit www.FIMAN.NC.gov and select the flood gauge(s) located in the waterways you’d like to monitor in real time.
  • Obtain Your 2024 Reentry Permit: In order to enter Dare County following a mandatory evacuation that has been issued to ensure public safety, individuals must present a current reentry permit* (along with a valid corresponding ID) and follow a staged reentry process. For more detailed information—and to obtain your 2024 reentry permit—please visit www.DareNC.gov/Reentry.

*Please note that expired reentry permits from previous years will not be accepted. No one will be denied entry with proper identification. All Dare County residents are welcome to apply for a reentry permit; however, a valid ID that contains a Dare County address is sufficient on its own for local residents, and a reentry permit is not necessary for these individuals to obtain.

The first step in making sure that you and your family are prepared for severe weather is pledging to prepare. This includes developing a family emergency and communications plan. In short, know what to do before severe weather strikes by creating an emergency plan today. Visit https://www.ready.gov/plan to make your plan today!
