KDH Holiday Donation Drive

The Town of Kill Devil Hills is collecting donations to benefit Toys for Tots and Dare County’s Children & Youth Partnership’s Diaper Bank. The Town will be collecting donations through December 17, 2024.

Donation boxes are located at:

  • KDH Town Hall/Police Dept. Lobby - 102 Town Hall Dr.
  •  KDH Fire Dept. - 1630 N. Croatan Hwy.
  •  KDH Recycle Center - 701 Bermuda Bay Blvd

When you place an item in a Toys for Tots collection box, you can experience the joy of knowing that the gift you gave will be under the tree in a less fortunate family's home, bringing a smile and hope to a child on Christmas morning.

Donating diapers helps keep babies clean, dry, and healthy, and makes a big difference in the lives of families. Imagine receiving such a wonderful donation so you don't have to choose between buying diapers for your baby or putting gas in your car for the week.

Please consider donating to these causes this holiday season. Your contribution can make a significant impact on our community!

Love Your Live Oak

Tree Adoption

The Town of Kill Devil Hills' Community Appearance Commission (CAC) worked to establish an official town tree, the Live Oak. Awareness and preservation efforts are conducted during the month of May with a ‘Love Your Live Oak’ campaign. Leading up to the campaign, the CAC will be accepting applications from KDH residents who are interested in receiving a live oak tree, at no cost to them, to plant on their property.

To receive a free young Live Oak Tree, please complete an application.

Applications will be collected through December 31, 2024, for review by the CAC in January of 2025. (Limit one application per property owner. Previous recipients not eligible.)

Did you know that Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires?

Cooking is the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries and the second leading cause of home fire deaths.

Don't be a Statistic, Cook with Caution:

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  •  If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

Top 10 Safety Tips:

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
