From Dare County Health and Human Services:Community Friendsgiving Meal Open to All on Saturday November 29, 2025The Dare County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is partnering with several local businesses to host a Community Friendsgiving on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Families and friends are invited to join in fellowship and enjoy a free four-course meal from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Dare County Youth Center at Family Recreation Park located at 602 Mustian Street in Kill Devil Hills. “In the spirit of gratitude and giving thanks, the goal of this event is to provide a warm and delicious meal for up to 2,000 people,” said DHHS Director Dr. Sheila Davies. “Times are challenging and this will be a great afternoon of food and fellowship.” To-go containers will be available so that meals can be picked up and delivered to someone who isn’t able to attend, such as the elderly and homebound community members. This kid-friendly community dinner is open to all and guests can feel free to drop in anytime. “This event would not be possible without the help of our generous sponsors,” continued Davies. “We are grateful for the support from The Roadside Bar & Grill, Metro Rentals, Sysco Outer Banks, Outer Banks Women’s Club, and Roanoke Island Women's Club”. 4 Tips to Gobble Up for a Safe ThanksgivingStay Safe While CookingThe kitchen is the heart of your Thanksgiving, but it’s also a common place for accidents. Cooking fires in homes occur more often on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Keep safety front and center and follow these guidelines when cooking: - Never leave your pan unattended.
- Keep a fire extinguisher on hand.
- Keep flammable items away from the stove.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over.
- Keep a pan lid or baking sheet nearby so you can cover the pan if it catches on fire.
- For additional tips, visit the U.S. Fire Administration’s Cooking Fire Safety webpage.
There are many sources of potential accidental burns in the home, and they’re not just caused by a fire. Visit Ready.gov for tips on preventing and treating minor burns. Home Heating SafetyWhile we are in the midst of changing seasons and fluctuating temperatures, it’s important to make sure your home heating system is in good working order. Make sure your home heating system is inspected by a professional to ensure it is in proper working order. If you’re using wood stoves, fireplaces or space heaters, keep them at a safe distance from flammable materials and never leave them unattended. Maintain your heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected prior to use each year. Travel SafetyIf you’re hitting the road for Thanksgiving, ensure you are well-prepared for what travels lay ahead. Make sure your car is in good working order for a road trip, pack an emergency preparedness kit and check the weather before departing. If you are traveling alone, be sure to share your travel plans with someone and take plenty of breaks throughout your journey to ensure you’re fully rested and alert. For current road conditions from NCDOT, visit drivenc.gov or follow NCDOT on Twitter or Facebook. Holiday Online Shopping SafetyWhile Thanksgiving is a time to be with friends and family, it also heralds the holiday shopping season. While shopping for Black Friday deals, only visit reputable websites and don’t click suspicious links or emails, including unverified merchants on social media. It’s also important to protect yourself by using strong, unique passwords for each account you’re using while shopping online. Finally, keep your devices secured by using the latest software available. For additional holiday online shopping tips, visit Shopping Safely Online | CISA. Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness and ensuring safety is a crucial part of the celebration. By following these tips, you can have a wonderful Thanksgiving while keeping those you care about safe and secure.

Holiday Donation Drive collecting items through December 15, 2025 This holiday season, the Town of Kill Devil Hills is collecting donations to benefit the Beach Food Pantry and Toys for Tots. Our community always shines its brightest when it comes to helping one another. Please join us in supporting these two organizations that make a tremendous difference for local families. As we gather with loved ones and celebrate the season of giving, we’re reminded that not all families in our community have the comfort of full cupboards or gifts beneath the tree. For some, the holidays bring added stress and uncertainty. But together, we can change that. Every item donated, whether a can of soup, a bag of rice, a new toy, or a hygiene kit for a teenager, is a shared reminder that in this community, no one is forgotten and no one is alone. This year, let’s fill shelves, warm hearts, and lift one another up. Your generosity can help ensure local families have a nourishing meal to enjoy and that our youth experience the joy and excitement of opening a gift meant just for them. Please consider donating between now and December 15, 2025. Donation boxes are located at: - KDH Town Hall/Police Department Lobby – 102 Town Hall Drive
- KDH Fire Dept. – 1630 N. Croatan Hwy.
- KDH Recycle Center – 701 Bermuda Bay Blvd.
Together, we can make this holiday season one of comfort, joy, and community. If you’re unable to donate, but still want to help, please consider spreading the word to inspire others to join in.
