Beach Driving Permit Information
October 1, 2025 – April 30, 2026 Driving Season
To apply for a beach driving permit in the Town of Kill Devil Hills, you must complete an application at one of the two locations listed below or online at kdhnc.com:
KDH beach driving permits are only for driving on Kill Devil Hills beaches.
KDH Finance Department: Cashier’s Counter, located on the second floor of Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive, Kill Devil Hills, NC. Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday Payment method: cash, check, credit or debit card Permit Cost Length of Time Placement on vehicle Seasonal $25 October 1 – April 30 Front bumper (driver’s side) Temporary $10 Up to 14 days from issue Driver’s side in windshield |

- Vehicle license plate number
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) – located on vehicle, registration card or insurance certificate

REMEMBER:
The speed limit for beach driving is 15 mph.
Driving is permitted daily from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour following sunset.
Modified Utility Vehicles (MUTVs) are not permitted on Kill Devil Hills beaches.
Any changes or closures to beach driving will be posted to the Town’s website. Before driving on the beach, check back here for any updates.
A few things to note:
- KDH seasonal permits are $25 and KDH temporary permits are $10 (good for 14 days). Information about purchasing a permit is on our website.
- KDH beach driving permits are ONLY good for the Town of Kill Devil Hills beach.
- The speed limit is 15 mph.
- Air down your tires!
- Storms and high tides can cause rough beach conditions and may limit driving room. During high tides, portions of the beach may become impassible. Obey all closure signs and notices. Check the Town’s website regularly for any possible closures.
- As always, drive cautiously, paying close attention to the water, foot-travelers, fishermen, and your surroundings.
